A VIOLIN BY

J. B. GUADAGNINI

PARMA, 1760

ex Wanamaker—Caressa

1760* A large half-size violin, an original work of J. B. Guadagnini with the exception of the head. It was formerly in possession of the late Vatelot-Hekking, a dealer of Paris, and was acquired by Erich Lachmann who brought it to this country where it passed to Wurlitzer. Authentic works of small size by the great masters are very scarce.

1760 Plates in The Strad, issue of March 1918, with an accompanying article by Towry Piper, picture this attractive violin. At that time it was owned by Mr. A. Tibbie, who had purchased it from the dealer Arthur Beare, of London. The instrument has a two piece back of broad figured maple, and the varnish was described as a lustrous red.

1760* ex Keller. Once in the possession of the English dealer Hesketh of Manchester. In 1923 it was acquired by Wurlitzer. Through the intermediary of the late O. H. Bryant, of Boston, Harrison Keller of that city became the owner. In 1947 he sold it to Alfred Krips, of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It is a handsome specimen, with two piece back and orange varnish.

1760* ex Wanamaker. An amateur player of Paris formerly owned this violin before it passed to Albert Caressa, from whom it was acquired for the Wanamaker interests. It was one of the items of the collection at the time it was purchased by Wurlitzer. The present owner is Charles Jones, of Oakland, California. (Illustrated)

1761* ex Hart-Wanamaker. The second of two quite exceptional works of the maker contained in the Wanamaker Collection when it passed to Wurlitzer. It had been acquired from Hart & Son, in 1927, by Wanamaker. In 1943 Jay C. Rosenfeld, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, purchased it from the Wurlitzer Company. (Illustrated)
